Migration and Memories 📸

Dogs in costumes, migrating birds, and our 2024 Urban Rivers photo contest!

Howl-oween

Howl-Oween was a success - thank you to all who participated! There was some tough competition this year, and we loved seeing both new and old furry faces on the Wild Mile.

  • First Place: the Chicago Dog (and accompanying Cubs fans)

  • Runner-up: Queen Winter (and her loyal servants)

  • Honorable Mention: Mike Wazowski and Sully (and Boo!)

You can take a look at our full photo album (with the prize-winning contestants and many more), here!

Migration Season

Every fall, hundreds of thousands of birds pass through Chicago as part of their seasonal migration. Though for many Chicago is simply a stop along the way, fall also means saying goodbye to some of the birds who were born and raised in our city. Black-crowned Night Herons, most of which are just starting to shed their teenage plumage, are an increasingly common sight at dusk as they make their way out of the city along our waterways. Come bid them farewell as they embark on their journeys!

2024 Photo Contest!

Submissions for our 2024 Photo Contest are now open! To be eligible, photos must have been taken within the 2024 calendar year, within a reasonable range of either an Urban Rivers project or related activity/event. We’ll be choosing winners in the categories of People, Wildlife, and Landscape, in addition to an overall champion. Click the button below to enter your photos - submissions close on December 1st!

Bubba and Nick: Ferocious lion and brave safari guide!

Phil: Just Phil.
